Moonrise over the Sea
Caspar David Friedrich Β· 1822
Why it's great
Three people sit on large rocks beside the water, gazing at the glowing disk of the moon as it rises, with ships in the distance. Friedrich painted the quiet, spiritual scene near the Baltic. The light on the water is magical. It's a famous image of peaceful watching.

Caspar David Friedrich was born in the Baltic port of Greifswald, Germany, and later settled in Dresden. He painted quiet, mysterious landscapes of mountains, fog, ruins, and seashores, often with a tiny figure seen from behind. He believed nature was a way of feeling something divine. He became a hero of German Romanticism, though he was nearly forgotten for decades before being rediscovered.
