Fishermen at Sea
J. M. W. Turner Β· 1796
Why it's great
A small boat of fishermen struggles with the waves by the moonlight, with a bright full moon, under heavy clouds, near the rocky Needles off the Isle of Wight. Turner painted this at age 21, and it was his first oil painting shown at the Royal Academy. It brought him early fame. It's an early sign of his genius for atmosphere.

J. M. W. Turner was born in London, the son of a barber, and became a student at the Royal Academy at just 14. He traveled across Britain and Europe, painting storms, ships, and sunsets in swirling light and color. He called the sky his subject, and his late paintings are almost abstract. He left thousands of works to the British nation when he died in London in 1851.
