Lake with Dead Trees (Catskill)

Thomas Cole Β· 1825

Why it's great

Bare, dead trees rise from a calm lake, in the Catskill Mountains of New York, under a stormy sky. Thomas Cole painted the wild America, with a touch of sadness. It's one of the first paintings by the founder of the Hudson River School. It's a famous early American landscape.
