View of Pillnitz Castle

Johan Christian Dahl · 1823

Why it's great

A castle near Dresden, Germany, sits on the bank of the Elbe River in the light of dawn. Johan Christian Dahl, a Norwegian who settled in Dresden, painted the castle in a clear, calm style. His friend Caspar David Friedrich lived in the same city. It's a peaceful scene of the Elbe valley.
