Alte Nationalgalerie
A temple-like gallery on Berlin's Museum Island, with German and French art of the 1800s: Caspar David Friedrich's Romantic paintings, Menzel, Böcklin and the Impressionists.
History of the museum
The building was designed by Friedrich August Stüler and Johann Heinrich Strack and opened in 1876 for paintings of the 'present', 19th-century art, with the help of a donation by the banker Joachim Wagener. It was damaged in the Second World War and reopened in 2001 after a major restoration. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Museum Island.
