Frederick the Great Playing the Flute at Sanssouci

Adolph von Menzel Β· 1852

Why it's great

King Frederick the Great plays the flute in a glittering hall lit by candles as musicians and courtiers listen. Menzel painted the king as a music-lover, which he truly was. The chandeliers and mirrors shimmer. It's a famous German painting of the 1700s.
