Studio Wall
Adolph von Menzel Β· 1872
Why it's great
A wall of a painter's studio, with tools, casts and a drape in a soft light. Menzel painted the corner of his own studio and made it a still life. The messy but lovely details make a charming scene. It's a picture of the tools of art.

Adolph von Menzel was born in Breslau (now WrocΕaw, Poland) and lived most of his life in Berlin. He was Germany's greatest realist painter and an amazing draftsman. He painted history scenes, factories and daily life. He was a very short man who worked until his death in 1905.
