Why it's great
A group of poets and writers, including the famous Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, sit at a table in a dark café. Fantin-Latour painted this portrait of a literary club. The faces look serious. It's a record of a gathering of important writers.

Henri Fantin-Latour was born in Grenoble, France, and spent most of his life in Paris. He was a friend of Manet and the Impressionists, though his own style was more traditional. He painted lovely flowers and group portraits of artists and musicians. He died in 1904.
