A Studio at Les Batignolles
Henri Fantin-Latour · 1870
Why it's great
Manet sits at his easel, painting a model, while a group of his friends, including Monet and Renoir, gather to watch. Fantin-Latour painted this tribute to Manet, who was a leader of a new type of art. It's a group portrait of artists. It documents a key moment in art history.

Henri Fantin-Latour was born in Grenoble, France, and spent most of his life in Paris. He was a friend of Manet and the Impressionists, though his own style was more traditional. He painted lovely flowers and group portraits of artists and musicians. He died in 1904.
