Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot · 1869
Why it's great
A woman in a simple blouse and a bright red skirt sits reading, with the light on her face, in the shade. Corot is known for his silvery landscapes, but also painted quiet figure paintings. The picture is simple and calm. It's a gentle portrait.
