Still Life with Profile of Laval
Paul Gauguin Β· 1886
Why it's great
A pot, fruits and flowers on a table, and the profile of a young man's face seems to float in the background. Gauguin painted it as a tribute to his friend Charles Laval. The mix of a portrait and a still life is playful. It's a clever picture.

Paul Gauguin was born in Paris and spent part of childhood in Peru. He worked as a stockbroker before turning to painting full-time. He lived in Brittany, in Arles with Van Gogh, and then in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, seeking a simpler life. His flat, vivid colors influenced Picasso and Matisse.
