Tahitian Woman with a Flower
Paul Gauguin Β· 1891
Why it's great
A woman in a long white dress holds a flower to her ear, in warm tropical light. Gauguin painted it soon after arriving in Tahiti. The simple, strong figure and bold colors show his new direction. It's a famous image of his first stay on the island.

Paul Gauguin was born in Paris and spent part of childhood in Peru. He worked as a stockbroker before turning to painting full-time. He lived in Brittany, in Arles with Van Gogh, and then in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, seeking a simpler life. His flat, vivid colors influenced Picasso and Matisse.
