Portrait of the Artist with the Yellow Christ
Paul Gauguin Β· 1890
Why it's great
Gauguin sits in front of two of his paintings, a yellow Christ and a strange ceramic pot, with a cool gaze. He painted himself among his own work. The bold flat colors and shapes were new. It's a confident self-portrait.

Paul Gauguin was born in Paris and spent part of childhood in Peru. He worked as a stockbroker before turning to painting full-time. He lived in Brittany, in Arles with Van Gogh, and then in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, seeking a simpler life. His flat, vivid colors influenced Picasso and Matisse.
