When Will You Marry?
Paul Gauguin Β· 1892
Why it's great
Two women sit on the ground in Tahiti in bright colorful clothes, one gazing out with a serious look. Gauguin moved to the South Pacific hoping to find a simpler world, and his bold colors and flat shapes helped inspire modern art. The title is a question put to a woman by her neighbors. In 2015 it was reported to have sold for around $300 million, among the highest prices ever.

Paul Gauguin was born in Paris and spent part of childhood in Peru. He worked as a stockbroker before turning to painting full-time. He lived in Brittany, in Arles with Van Gogh, and then in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, seeking a simpler life. His flat, vivid colors influenced Picasso and Matisse.
