Work Interrupted
William-Adolphe Bouguereau Β· 1891
Why it's great
A young woman in a country dress sits by a stone wall, her work in her lap, looking up as if she's been interrupted. Bouguereau painted a calm and pretty scene. The lighting and polished skin are typical of him. It was a favorite of American collectors.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was born in La Rochelle, on France's Atlantic coast, and studied in Paris and Rome. He became the most celebrated painter of the French Academy, famous for smooth, glowing figures from myths and everyday life. He taught thousands of students. When Impressionism rose, he fell from fashion, but his technical skill is again widely admired.
