Kunstmuseum Basel
The oldest public art collection in the world has Holbein and Cranach, Picasso and Klee in two buildings in the Swiss city of Basel.
History of the museum
In 1661 the city of Basel bought the collection of the Amerbach family, the first time that a private art collection was bought for the public. That is why Basel's museum is said to be the oldest public art museum in the world. It has the world's biggest collection of the painter Hans Holbein the Younger, and its modern wing is famous for Picasso.
