The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb
Hans Holbein the Younger Β· 1520
Why it's great
Christ's pale body lies stretched on a slab, shown in a long, narrow panel. Hans Holbein the Younger painted it in 1520, and it is so realistic that it is said to have startled the writer Dostoevsky.

Hans Holbein the Younger was a German painter born in Augsburg in about 1497. He worked in Basel and then in London, where he became court painter to King Henry VIII and painted portraits that made the Tudors famous. He died in London in 1543, probably of the plague.
