Penitent Magdalene
Titian Β· 1563
Why it's great
Mary Magdalene looks up toward heaven with tears in her eyes, with a jar and a skull nearby. Titian painted it in about 1563, and his loose, quick brushwork shows the emotion.

Titian was an Italian painter born in Pieve di Cadore around 1490. He worked in Venice and became the most famous painter in Europe, painting portraits for the Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of Spain with rich color and loose brushwork. He lived to a great age and died in Venice in 1576.
