Pietà
Titian · 1575
Why it's great
Mary holds the dead Christ in a dark, painterly picture, with a saint kneeling and an old man at the left. Titian painted it in about 1575, as he was dying, and it was finished by Palma il Giovane.

Titian was an Italian painter born in Pieve di Cadore around 1490. He worked in Venice and became the most famous painter in Europe, painting portraits for the Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of Spain with rich color and loose brushwork. He lived to a great age and died in Venice in 1576.
