Corpse of Christ
Annibale Carracci Β· 1582
Why it's great
Christ's dead body lies stretched out on a slab, painted in a shocking, foreshortened view. Annibale Carracci painted it in about 1582, and Mantegna's Lamentation had inspired the shocking angle.

Annibale Carracci was an Italian painter born in Bologna in 1560. He and his brother and cousin founded an art school that brought back the clear, natural style of the Renaissance, and he painted the ceiling of the Farnese Gallery in Rome. He died in 1609.
