Resurrection of Christ
Annibale Carracci Β· 1593
Why it's great
Christ steps out of his tomb with a banner, while soldiers lie scattered on the ground. Annibale Carracci painted this in about 1593, and his swirling cloak is full of motion.

A
Annibale Carracci was an Italian painter born in Bologna in 1560. He and his brother and cousin founded an art school that brought back the clear, natural style of the Renaissance, and he painted the ceiling of the Farnese Gallery in Rome. He died in 1609.
