Saint Martin and the Beggar

Why it's great
A young soldier on a white horse cuts his red cloak in half to share it with a poor man. El Greco painted it in about 1597, and the story is told about how Saint Martin was kind.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
