The Concert of the Angels
El Greco · 1600
Why it's great
Angels with lutes, violins and other instruments make a swirling heavenly concert in the clouds. El Greco painted it in about 1600, and the long, flame-like figures are typical of his style.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
