Fray Hortensio Félix Paravicino
El Greco · 1609
Why it's great
A monk in black with glasses in his hand looks out with a stern, intellectual face. El Greco painted Paravicino, a priest and poet, in about 1609, and it is one of his best portraits.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
