The Nobleman with his Hand on his Chest
El Greco · 1580
Why it's great
A man in black with a white collar and a tiny beard puts his hand on his chest, looking out with tired eyes. El Greco painted it in about 1580, and nobody knows who he was.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
