Adoration of the Shepherds
El Greco · 1612
Why it's great
Shepherds and angels crowd around the glowing newborn Jesus, in long, flame-like shapes under a dark sky. El Greco painted it in about 1612, and he planned it to be hung over his own tomb.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
