The Flight into Egypt
Adam Elsheimer Β· 1609
Why it's great
Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus walk through a dark forest at night, with a torch, a campfire, the Milky Way and the moon reflected in a pond. Adam Elsheimer painted it in 1609, and it was one of the first pictures to show the stars as they really look.
