Death of the Virgin

Caravaggio Β· 1603

Why it's great

The apostles weep in a dark room around Mary, who lies on a bed with a swollen body and bare feet, under a big red curtain. Caravaggio painted it in about 1603, and it was rejected by the church that ordered it because it was too real.
