The Coronation of the Virgin
El Greco · 1600
Why it's great
Mary kneels in the clouds as Christ and God the Father place a crown on her head, with angels all around. El Greco painted it in about 1600, and it is a blaze of bright color.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
