The Resurrection

Why it's great
Christ rises from his tomb in a twisting swirl, while soldiers tumble around him. El Greco painted it in about 1598, and the long, stretched bodies are typical of his style.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
