View of Toledo
El Greco · 1596
Why it's great
A green city on a hill is under a dark, stormy sky, with flashes of light on its walls and the river below. El Greco painted it in about 1599, and it is one of the first great landscapes in Spanish painting.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
