The Clothed Maja
Francisco Goya · 1800
Why it's great
A young woman reclines on a green couch in a white gown with a golden sash, gazing out confidently. Goya painted this as a twin to the famous nude version, and each could be switched in a hidden frame. It's famous for its sparkling fabric and for the mystery of who she was. It's still one of the best-loved works in Madrid's Prado Museum.

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
