The Milkmaid of Bordeaux
Francisco Goya Β· 1827
Why it's great
A woman in a dress sits on a donkey, with a patch of light on her face, riding to market in Bordeaux. Goya painted this in exile near the end of his life, at age 80. The loose brushstrokes made him a forerunner of the Impressionists. It shows his youthful spirit even in old age.

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
