Self-portrait with Dr Arrieta

Francisco Goya Β· 1820

Why it's great

The elderly Goya, ill and pale, is held by his doctor, who offers him a drink. Goya painted it as thanks to Dr. Arrieta for saving his life. Dark shadows loom behind them. It's a touching tribute.

About the artist

Francisco Goya

1746–1828 Β· born in Fuendetodos Β· died in Bordeaux

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
