Self-Portrait as Bacchus

Caravaggio · 1595

Why it's great

A young man with a wreath of ivy leaves and a bunch of grapes looks out with a sickly, greenish tone. Caravaggio painted it in about 1595, and it is known as the Sick Bacchus, since it was painted when he had been ill.
