The Burial of the Count of Orgaz
El Greco · 1586
Why it's great
Two saints in gleaming robes lower a dead nobleman into his tomb, while the noblemen of Toledo watch and a vision of heaven opens above. El Greco painted it in 1586, and it is his most famous work.

El Greco, whose name means The Greek, was born on the island of Crete in 1541 and moved to Spain, where he lived in Toledo. He painted long, twisting figures with flickering light and brilliant colors, quite unlike anyone else of his time. He died in 1614.
