Portrait of a Couple probably Isaac Massa and Beatrix van der Laen
Frans Hals · 1622
Why it's great
A young couple sit in a garden, and she rests her hand on his shoulder, as they smile at us. Frans Hals painted it in about 1622, and it is one of the first portraits of a happy, relaxed married couple.

Frans Hals was a Dutch painter who was born in Antwerp around 1582 and lived most of his life in Haarlem. He painted lively portraits with fast, loose brushstrokes, so his sitters seem to laugh, drink and talk right in front of you. He died in Haarlem in 1666.
