The Banquet of the Officers of the St George Militia Company in 1616
Frans Hals · 1616
Why it's great
A table full of officers in sashes and ruffs drinks and chats, with a flag and food, in a very lively group. Frans Hals painted it in 1616, and it was one of the first paintings where a group of friends look relaxed.

Frans Hals was a Dutch painter who was born in Antwerp around 1582 and lived most of his life in Haarlem. He painted lively portraits with fast, loose brushstrokes, so his sitters seem to laugh, drink and talk right in front of you. He died in Haarlem in 1666.
