Regentesses of the Old Men's Alms House
Frans Hals · 1664
Why it's great
Five elderly women in black dresses and white collars look out at us with serious faces, around a table. Frans Hals painted it in 1664, when he was about 84, and the hands and faces are painted with quick, wise brushstrokes.

Frans Hals was a Dutch painter who was born in Antwerp around 1582 and lived most of his life in Haarlem. He painted lively portraits with fast, loose brushstrokes, so his sitters seem to laugh, drink and talk right in front of you. He died in Haarlem in 1666.
