Militia Company of District XI under the Command of Captain Reynier Reael
Frans Hals · 1633
Why it's great
A company of Amsterdam's citizen soldiers pose around a table in dark clothes and colored sashes, some standing, some sitting. Frans Hals and Pieter Codde painted it between 1633 and 1637, and each man has a different expression.

Frans Hals was a Dutch painter who was born in Antwerp around 1582 and lived most of his life in Haarlem. He painted lively portraits with fast, loose brushstrokes, so his sitters seem to laugh, drink and talk right in front of you. He died in Haarlem in 1666.
