The Proposition
Judith Leyster Β· 1631
Why it's great
A man offers coins to a woman who is sewing by candlelight, and she ignores him. Judith Leyster painted it in 1631, and it is a picture that says that a good woman will not be tempted by money.

Judith Leyster was a Dutch painter born in Haarlem in 1609. She painted lively scenes of musicians and everyday people and was one of the few women admitted to the painters' guild. After she died in 1660 her work was mistaken for Frans Hals's until it was rediscovered in the 1890s.
