Mauritshuis
A small, elegant 17th-century mansion in The Hague holds some of the most famous paintings in the Netherlands: Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp and Fabritius's Goldfinch.
History of the museum
Johan Maurits, a Dutch governor in Brazil, had the house built in the 1640s. It became a museum in 1822, when the Dutch government bought it to show the royal art collection. In 2014 it reopened after a two-year renovation and a new underground extension. Donna Tartt's novel The Goldfinch, from 2013, made one of its paintings famous.
