Van Gogh Museum
The world's largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings, with about 200 paintings, is in a modern building beside the Rijksmuseum, along with his letters and works by his friends.
History of the museum
After Vincent van Gogh's death in 1890, his brother Theo and then Theo's wife, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, kept and promoted the art. Vincent's nephew, also named Vincent, a young engineer, agreed in 1962 that the Dutch state would build a museum for the collection. The Van Gogh Museum, designed by Gerrit Rietveld, opened in 1973. A new wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa opened in 1999.
