Vincent van Gogh Painting Sunflowers
Paul Gauguin · 1888
Why it's great
Van Gogh sits at his easel, painting a vase of sunflowers, while Gauguin watches closely. Gauguin painted this picture when they lived together in Arles. Van Gogh said it looked like him, 'but gone mad.' It's a rare picture of one great artist painting another.

Paul Gauguin was born in Paris and spent part of childhood in Peru. He worked as a stockbroker before turning to painting full-time. He lived in Brittany, in Arles with Van Gogh, and then in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, seeking a simpler life. His flat, vivid colors influenced Picasso and Matisse.
