Girl with peaches
Valentin Serov · 1887
Why it's great
A girl sits at a table in a sunny dining room, peaches and a knife in front of her and light dancing on her face. Serov painted twelve-year-old Vera Mamontova at her family's country home, working for weeks on the portrait. The fresh, natural light was a joy after stiff, formal portraits. It's one of Russia's best-loved paintings.
