Girl with a Pearl Earring

Johannes Vermeer Β· 1665

Why it's great

A girl in a blue and yellow turban looks over her shoulder at us, with her lips slightly parted and a large pearl at her ear, against a dark background. Johannes Vermeer painted it in about 1665, and no one knows who she was. It is often called the Mona Lisa of the North.
