The Art of Painting
Johannes Vermeer Β· 1667
Why it's great
A painter in a funny puffy hat sits with his back to us, painting a woman in a blue dress with a laurel wreath and a trumpet, in a rich room with a huge map and a chandelier. Johannes Vermeer painted it in about 1666, and it is thought to be a picture of his own studio.

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter born in Delft in 1632. He painted calm scenes of women in sunlit rooms, with pearls, maps, letters and music, and made fewer than 40 paintings that we know of. He died in 1675, and he was almost forgotten until the 1800s.
