The Music Lesson
Johannes Vermeer Β· 1662
Why it's great
A young woman stands at a harpsichord with her back to us, while a man stands near her, and a mirror shows her face. Johannes Vermeer painted it in about 1662, and the Latin words on the instrument mean 'Music is the companion of joy and balm for sorrow.'

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter born in Delft in 1632. He painted calm scenes of women in sunlit rooms, with pearls, maps, letters and music, and made fewer than 40 paintings that we know of. He died in 1675, and he was almost forgotten until the 1800s.
