The Astronomer
Johannes Vermeer Β· 1664
Why it's great
A man in a blue robe sits at a table and reaches for a globe, with an astrolabe and a book in front of him. Johannes Vermeer painted it in 1668, and the light from the window falls on his thoughtful face.

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter born in Delft in 1632. He painted calm scenes of women in sunlit rooms, with pearls, maps, letters and music, and made fewer than 40 paintings that we know of. He died in 1675, and he was almost forgotten until the 1800s.
