Beware of Luxury (“In Weelde Siet Toe”)
Jan Steen · 1663
Why it's great
A messy room full of food, bad habits and silly behavior, with a mother who is asleep, a pig eating a rose and children playing with a dog. Jan Steen painted it in 1663, and the Dutch title means 'Beware of luxury'. A messy house is still called a Jan Steen household.

Jan Steen was a Dutch painter born in Leiden in 1626. He painted lively, messy family scenes and parties full of jokes and lessons, so much that a messy home is called a Jan Steen household in Dutch. He died in 1679.
